Libyan War Over Water, To Take It Away From Libyans

The 1st of September marks the anniversary of the opening of the major stage of Libya’s Great Man-Made River Project. This incredibly huge and successful water scheme is virtually unknown in the West, yet it rivals and even surpasses all our greatest development projects. The leader of the so-called advanced countries, the United States of America cannot bring itself to acknowledge Libya’s Great Man-Made River. The West refuses to recognize that a small country, with a population no more than four million, can construct anything so large without borrowing a single cent from the international banks.

In the 1960s during oil exploration deep in the southern Libyan desert, vast reservoirs of high quality water were discovered in the form of aquifers.

In Libya there are four major underground basins, these being the Kufra basin, the Sirt basin, the Morzuk basin and the Hamada basin, the first three of which contain combined reserves of 35,000 cubic kilometres of water. These vast reserves offer almost unlimited amounts of water for the Libyan people.

The people of Libya under the guidance of their leader, Colonel Muammar Al Qadhafi, initiated a series of scientific studies on the possibility of accessing this vast ocean of fresh water. Early consideration was given to developing new agricultural projects close to the sources of the water, in the desert. However, it was realized that on the scale required to provide products for self sufficiency, a very large infrastructure organization would be required. In addition to this, a major redistribution of the population from the coastal belt would be necessary. The alternative was to ‘bring the water to the people’.

In October 1983, the Great Man-made River Authority was created and invested with the responsibility of taking water from the aquifers in the south, and conveying it by the most economical and practical means for use, predominantly for irrigation, in the Libyan coastal belt.

By 1996 the Great Man-Made River Project had reached one of its final stages, the gushing forth of sweet unpolluted water to the homes and gardens of the citizens of Libya’s capital Tripoli. Louis Farrakhan, who took part in the opening ceremony of this important stage of the project, described the Great Man-Made River as “another miracle in the desert.” Speaking at the inauguration ceremony to an audience that included Libyans and many foreign guests, Col. Qadhafi said the project “was the biggest answer to America… who accuse us of being concerned with terrorism.”

Col. Muammar Qaddafi told the celebrants: “After this achievement, American threats against Libya will double…. The United States will make excuses, [but] the real reason is to stop this achievement, to keep the people of Libya oppressed.” Qaddafi presented the project to the cheering crowd as a gift to the Third World.

London and Washington circles were apoplectic about the opening of the new Libyan water project. The LondonFinancial Times ran criticisms of the project from Angus Henley of the London-based Middle East Economic Digest. The pipeline, he said, was “Qaddafi’s pet project. He wants to be seen as something other than the scourge of the West.” The Financial Times called the project Qaddafi’s “pipedream,” stating that critics may be awed by the engineering involved, “But they regard the dream as a monument to vanity that makes little economic sense in a country where the U.N. Development Program says 94.6% of territory is desert wasteland.”

If it is vanity that motivated the project, at least the vanity of Libya’s head of state is being channeled in a productive direction in this case–which is more than can be said of the leaders of Britain and the United States.

The Great Man-Made River, as the largest water transport project ever undertaken, has been described as the “eighth wonder of the world”. It carries more than five million cubic metres of water per day across the desert to coastal areas, vastly increasing the amount of arable land. The total cost of the huge project is expected to exceed $25 billion (US).

Consisting of a network of pipes buried underground to eliminate evaporation, four meters in diameter, the project extends for four thousand kilometres far deep into the desert. All material is locally engineered and manufactured. Underground water is pumped from 270 wells hundreds of meters deep into reservoirs that feed the network. The cost of one cubic meter of water equals 35 cents. The cubic meter of desalinized water is $3.75. Scientists estimate the amount of water to be equivalent to the flow of 200 years of water in the Nile River.

The goal of the Libyan Arab people, embodied in the Great Man-Made River project, is to make Libya a source of agricultural abundance, capable of producing adequate food and water to supply its own needs and to share with neighboring countries. In short, the River is literally Libya’s ‘meal ticket’ to self-sufficiency.

Self-sufficiency?!? Absolutely Not Allowed.

P.S. Another video on the water project can be seen here. Ya think the "liberators" are being careful not to destroy the water project with their bombing? Is there another country in the region that might covet that water supply?

Jewish Settlers Burn Commercial Stores in Al-Khalil Old City

Al-KHALIL -- Armed Jewish settlers attacked at dawn Tuesday Palestinian commercial stores with Molotov cocktails in Kazazeen souk (market) in the old city of Al-Khalil burning down four of them and all goods inside them.

Owners of these stores are Shaban Hashlamoun, Mohamed Al-Shalloudi, Atta Al-Shweiki and Abdelhameed Al-Natsha.

Firefighters from Al-Khalil municipal council tried to enter the old city to extinguish the fire, but the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) blocked their way at the pretext the area was a closed military zone.

Eyewitnesses said they saw armed Jewish settlers in Kazazeen souk dancing in circles, singing and shouting racist chants against Arabs before culminating their revelry with an arson attack on the stores.

"We know the settlers torched our stores in order to expel us from our old city and fully take it over, but they can never achieve that and we are staying in the city even if we get killed," one of the Palestinian store owners said.

"They offered us huge amounts of money to sell our stores, and one of their leaders told us, 'You have an open check,' but we kicked them out and we told them to leave along with their lackeys because our [Palestinian] land is more precious than our blood and they cannot take a grain of its soil," he added.

Helen Thomas Withdraws from Move On AIPAC Conference

Jim Abourezk at Counterpunch [here] says that she was pressured to withdraw.

The reaction of anti-conservative zionist, liberal-zionist Mondoweis:

I'm fence sitting on this. In an earlier post I said it was a tactical mistake to invite Thomas because it would alienate the center and Jewish groups. Though yes I essentially agree with her view of the Jewish importance in the establishment, I find it crude.

My friend Gail Miller takes me to task:

It's a disappointment to me that you have contributed to this. I'm surprised that you think making nice to centrists and the Jewish community is the way to make progress on these issues; it's dirty work that leaves behind a pile that smells bad. You kind of try to backtrack in the body of the post but I think the damage done by her withdrawal because of concerns from within MoveOverAIPAC will be, at the end of the day, damaging to our movement.

Fair enough. Gail has a lot more political experience than I do. Though I'd (typically) seek to extract good news: in the rallying of Arab-Americans and left wingers around Thomas, I see a solidification of the movement behind the awareness that conservative Jewish influence must be addressed -- the lobby, which is coextensive with the Jewish leadership-- and therefore the importance for Jews of reconstructing Jewish identity before Zionism eats the media completely.

Source

P.S. LMAO: You meant "before conservative zionism eats the media completely" don't you Mondo? I'm sure Move On is kosher with you. It's led and dominated by "anti-conservative zionist, liberal zionists". So much so that one could think that it's a clone of that J-Street organization... except for the friendly goyim members.

What we need is a softer, kinder zionism, right? So kind that we even remove the label of zionism, just as we've removed it from ourselves. You know, the Norman Finkelstein zionism. Have it without declaring it; be zionists without declaring it. Declaring it, naming it, has negative connotations. Of course, jews must always have their place at the head of the table, and Israel has a right to exist. That's understood. That's without question. We have enough goyim on board with that. We can be jewish without declaring jewish exceptionalism. It's understood. Let's be nicer to the goyim now. They're all on board for the most part. There is no real anti-semitism except for a few goofballs. But we don't have to get all excited and bent out of shape about a few detractors. Lets just assume our jewish exceptionalism nicely without making a big stink about it. The goyim are onboard with it. Finkelstein knows. We all know.

No dammit! I'm sorry. You're right. Forget zionism! We don't want to be filthy, stinking zionists! Let's replace zionism completely with something nicer and more inclusive of our goyim, er... gentile friends. Hmmmm... I know! Lets be JIDs!... Jewish Inclusive Democrats. No. Still too exclusive sounding. Hmmm... perhaps Friends For Jewish Magnanimity... FFJM.... FFJM'ers. Not too catchy. Oh well, we'll have to work on it. The point is, we're beyond zionism now. Jewish exceptionalism is understood. We don't have to declare it. Declaring it and flaunting it is... well it's crude frankly.

The Gordon Duff, Dimitri Khalezov WTC Nuke Hoax

The Gordon Duff, Dimitri Khalezov hoax is esposed here.

Introduction
For years, various disinformation agents have been attempting to sabotage the 9/11 truth movement with claims that "mini-nukes" or "nuclear devices" were used to demolish the World Trade Center.

Conclusion
If Gordon Duff and Dimitri Khalezov were really so silly as to believe their claims about nuclear "demolition devices" having been installed beneath the Towers in the early Seventies with government approval, based on some "intelligence" that Khalezov had allegedly received - e.g. from an FBI agent, they would be demonstrating such an incredible gullibility, misunderstanding of politics and lack of common sense, etc., that this is not a realistic possibility. It is pretty obvious that the politicians who purported to have been fooled by "intelligence" about Iraq's so-called WMDs were almost all, if not indeed all, lying, yet Iraqi WMDs was nowhere near as crazy an idea as that of pre-installed nuclear "demolition devices" for high-rise buildings. Since the "nukes installed under the WTC in the early Seventies" claim is so preposterous it may be dismissed out of hand by anyone who is not stark, staring bonkers, Khalezov must have lied when he claimed to have become aware of the alleged 150 kTon devices from his "former service under the Soviet Special Control Service."

It [the ugly truth] is also clear that, not only should the 'work' of Duff and Khalezov be shunned by genuine investigators of 9/11, but anyone foolish enough to recommend them is, at best, so lacking in judgment that their opinions on any other matter are rendered worthless, and at worst, a partner in deception and cover up.

P.S. Thank you for this report, takeourworld back. When a guy, i.e., Gordon Duff, openly talks about family and friends in Israel, red flags should go up, anything that guy says should be questioned. I hardly think that Duff's family and friends in Israel are involved in human rights activities for Palestinians. I suspect they are from the same arrogant, privileged, supremacist cloth that Duff is from himself.

When a guy, i.e., Gordon Duff, expresses affinity for the depraved state of Israel, mentions that he has family and friends living there and constantly harps that 'it's not all jews', one has to question where his ultimate loyalty lies, and question what he's saying and why [no matter how appealing it may seem, given his vast security background n'all (I can hardly keep myself from laughing)], and whether it's a good idea to give him an audience.

Sorry, the ugly truth is that virtually all jews, all that identify themselves as 'jewish', are zionists. That means their ultimate loyalty is to themselves, their tribe, their exceptionalism.

Gordon Duff is jewish; he knows he's jewish; he knows whether or not anyone in his circle of friends is jewish. It matters to him... because... he's jewish.

Iceland's Message to Portugal, Americans Prove Again They're Dumb

This week has witnessed two very different reactions to European debt. At one end of Europe, Iceland’s voters decided once again not to accept the payment terms of their ‘creditors’, the British and Dutch governments, following the collapse of Icelandic banks in 2008. At the other, Portugal is being pushed down the path of shock therapy by the European Union, with the people of that country cut out of a process which will change their lives dramatically.

Neither Iceland nor Portugal will have it easy in the years ahead. But there is a world of difference between the refusal of the people of Iceland “to pay for failed banks” in the words of their President, and the pain being imposed on Portugal from the outside. The European Central Bank’s head Jean-Claude Trichet has made it perfectly clear that the negotiations on Portugal’s future are “certainly not for public” debate.

Iceland’s people have not made a knee-jerk reaction. They are well aware that refusal to pay is the less easy short-term route to take. An impending court case by the UK and the Netherlands, the negative reaction of credit markets and the threatened block to their EU membership will all take a toll.

But for the people of Iceland the orthodoxy as to how countries are supposed to deal with debt is not simply economically flawed, it is deeply unjust, unfairly distributing power and wealth within and between societies. Twenty eight-year-old voter Thorgerdun Ásgeirsdóttir said “I know this will probably hurt us internationally, but it is worth taking a stance.”

If the people of a country which truly bought into free market ideology, deregulated capital markets and cheap lending can refuse to pay for the crimes of the banks, then those that did less well from the decades of financial boom can be expected to feel even more impassioned.

In Greece such anger is starting to turn into a constructive challenge to the power of finance. A debt audit commission has been called for by hundreds of academics, politicians and activists. Such a commission would throw open Greece’s debts for public examination – directly confronting the way that the IMF and European Union work behind closed doors to force their often disastrous medicine on member countries.

As Greek activists have said, “the people who are called upon to bear the costs of EU programmes have a democratic right to receive full information on public debt. An Audit Commission can begin to redress this deficiency.”

Their resolve is currently being bolstered by a website phenomena – a short viral film called debtocracy (government by debt) – sweeping Greece’s online population and convincing them they have been taken for a ride. Early next month activists from across Europe and the developing world will gather in Athens to put together a programme which will challenge the IMF’s policies in Greece.

Portugal’s deal is just beginning to be hammered out. As in Greece and Ireland, a ‘bail-out’ package will primarily benefit Western European banks, with €216 billion of outstanding loans to Portugal, while ordinary people endure a programme of deep spending cuts, reduced workers’ rights and widespread privatisation. The head of Portugal’s Banco Carregosa told the FT: “It’s not an exaggeration to call it shock therapy.”

The comparisons with developing world countries are obvious and the mistakes there are already being repeated. Time and again banks were bailed out and the poorest people in the world were pushed even deeper into poverty. Today countries from Sierra Leone to Jamaica are racking up ever more debts, once again, to weather the banker’s storm.

This is why a line must be drawn in Europe. Pouring more debt on top of Portugal’s woes will do nothing to resuscitate the economy. Portugal’s debt is totally unsustainable – largely the result of reckless private lending over the last decade. Those responsible are being bailed out, those that aren’t are suffering the pain. This is what Iceland has refused to do.

The people of Iceland have stood up for their sovereignty. Their future looks considerably brighter than those of Ireland or Portugal. The people of Greece are just beginning their struggle. The outcomes will have a monumental impact on the fight against poverty and inequality across the world.

The Farce that is the Arab Regime

From Maysaloon:

The initial enthusiasm I felt with the success of the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions has now subsided. The past three months have exposed the painful truth which many Arabs refused to see, which is that the biggest enemy of the Arabs is not America, Iran or even Israel. It is the Arab rulers. The Arabs today are a people divided into tiny squabbling kingdoms dominated by petty ruling families who are propped up by a complacent international system and brutal security services that imprison or torture all those who dare say that "the emperor has no clothes". These ruling families have each developed a cult of personality that would put Stalin to shame. Over the past few weeks we have seen a concerted attempt to quell the tide of Arab dissatisfaction. Massive subsidies have been put back into place, wage increases for the public sector, free mobile phone minutes. All these actions, it is hoped, will quiet down the people and return them back to a docile and manageable state.

Furthermore, governments have also been sacked, apparently the puppet masters are greatly displeased that their puppets have not entertained the masses as they should have. Even al Jazeera's coverage has been toned down recently with regards to the protests in Syria and Bahrain. This is something which has been particularly surprising and troubling to me. It appears that pressure has been brought to bear on the Qatar based network, and whilst still maintaining extremely high standards, the channel is not as daring as it was whilst covering the fall of Mubarak. Ultimately it seems that the Arab revolutions are a threat which has been recognised by all Arab rulers, and this has united them in a way that no external threat ever could.

Yet whilst I feel despondent that change will not be as quick as I expected, I remain optimistic that the fear barrier has been broken. Even with Syria, I can see now that people are much more open in their views about the government, much more ready to give their opinion, than they would have been a year ago. It simply will not do to claim resistance, modernisation, or having a charming trophy wife, as a means to placate the masses. The people have seen through that, and they have seen how weak those who govern them really are. Something is changing, I just hope it is permanent.

P.S. Where would zionism be without collaborating crooks?

American Rich Keep Getting Richer

A group of 25 hedge fund executives in 2010 managed to earn a combined $22.1 billion — an amount equivalent to 441,400 American households each making $50,000 a year (roughly the current average).

This is one more example that the gap between the super-wealthy in the United States and the rest of Americans is growing wider and wider.

Considering that the median household size is 2.6 persons, that means that these 25 took home as much as the average of 1,150,000 Americans combined. That is bigger than the population of Dallas…or Rhode Island.

HIGHLIGHTS

Ten years ago, the same 25 Wall Street barons would have taken home a total of $5 billion. Now, a single hedge fund chief, John Paulson, was able to make that much ($4.9 billion) in 2010. Allgov

Paulson made billions during the worst of the financial downturn because he bet that the mortgage bubble would burst. Most of his profits in 2010 came from investing in gold, buying and selling stock in Citigroup…and collecting an estimated $1 billion in management fees. Allgov

“So many of these guys are killing it on the management fees,” said Bradley H. Alford, chief investment officer of Alpha Capital Management, which invests in hedge funds. “You can’t feel good giving 30 percent of your returns to some guy who was up single digits. That has to give you indigestion.” NY Times

FACTS & FIGURES

The hedge fund industry as a whole did not do better than the stock market last year, the HedgeFund Intelligence Global Composite Index, which tracks nearly 4,000 hedge funds around the world, had a median gain of 8 percent in 2010, trailing the 11.7 percent rise in the MSCI World Index of stocks and the 12.7 percent rise in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index. NY Times

The upper 1 percent of Americans are now taking in nearly a quarter of the nation’s income every year in terms of wealth rather than income, the top 1 percent control 40 percent. Investorshub

Twenty-five years ago, the corresponding figures were 12 percent and 33 percent. Investorshub

While the top 1 percent have seen their incomes increased by 18 percent over the past decade, those in the middle have actually seen their incomes fall. Investorshub

Israel Plans to Resume Assasination Campaigns

The Israeli army awaits the improvement of weather conditions to resume its assassinations operations targeted at leaders and activists affiliated with Hamas military wing. In a report published by the Hebrew version of Ynet Monday, a military commentator, Ron Bin Yeshay, said that the resumption of assassinations comes in an effort to excursive deterrence in confronting Palestinian factions two years after the bloody war launched on the Gaza Strip.

Bin Yeshay, indicated that the decision to take these operations to the next level was made recently in a small ministerial meeting presided over by Benjamin Netanyahu. Also at the meeting were leaders of Israel's security organs.

Netanyahu reportedly was reserved over the idea of launching a full-fledged military operation.

According to Bin Yeshay, in the event that Hamas steps up its operations against Israel in the wake of the assassination operations planned, the Israeli army may resort to targeting the movement's political leadership.

The Israeli intelligence, he says, hopes the assassinations would prompt Hamas to prevent other Palestinian factions from launching rockets onto the Israeli entity.

Bin Yeshay warns that this kind of provocation would put thousands of 'settlers' around the Gaza Strip under the mercy of resistance rockets as well as jeopardize chances for trading prisoners with Hamas.

Source article can be found here.

P.S. Is it just a matter of time before Israel decides to expand its assassination campaigns to include people it considers "anti-Semites" throughout the world? Ya better not be an "anti-Semite".

What does Goldstone know now?

Retired justice Richard Goldstone started his opinion piece published Friday on the Washington Post by saying, "We know a lot more today about what happened in the Gaza war of 2008-09 than we did when I chaired the fact-finding mission appointed by the U.N. Human Rights Council that produced what has come to be known as the Goldstone Report."

However, he strangely did not refer at all in his article to the new information he has gained.

"If I had known then what I know now, the Goldstone Report would have been a different document," the article continued, and again failed to elaborate on even a single instance that would call into question his own findings.

Could the South African justice be hinting that the 400 allegations of operational misconduct in a 22-day military offensive were all baseless thanks to the "significant resources Israel dedicated to investigate those allegations?"

Is it possible that the suggested new version of the Goldstone report could end up blaming the 29 victims of the Samouni family for sending the wrong signals to the Israeli drones?

The family had been hoarded into a single home over the course of three days, as fighting raged in northern Gaza. On the fourth day the home holding the extended family was struck by an Israeli air strike, wiping them out.

Speaking of the Samouni family, Goldstone boasts in his article that the Israeli officer who ordered the attack on the family is being investigated. "While the length of this investigation is frustrating, it appears that an appropriate process is underway, and I am confident that if the officer is found to have been negligent, Israel will respond accordingly."

Excuse my comparison, but this is like investigating a truck driver who runs over pedestrians, and his lawyer tries to convince juries that he did not see them cross the road because he was busy talking to his girlfriend. Investigations in Israel will never find the officer guilty of intentionally shelling civilians. At best, this officer might be found guilty of negligence, and, "accordingly," Israel's response will be a verbal apology.

Only in the seventh paragraph does Goldstone bother to blame Israel for one small thing -- "lack of cooperation with the fact-finding mission" -- and it would have been better if he hadn't. That lack of cooperation rendered the fact-finding mission unable to corroborate how many civilians and how many combatants were killed in Gaza. How about how many homes were leveled?

Seeking more ways to express regret and to sympathize with Israel after the alleged damage which stemmed from the report, the retired jurist strikes the note Israel likes by reminding the UN Human Rights Council to condemn the cold-blooded murder of an Israeli family in Itamar settlement.

I personally strongly condemn this murder and reject any attempts to justify it, and I have heard many Palestinians condemning it. Even though investigations have so far failed to prove the murderer was a Palestinian, West Bank villages and people have already suffered enough punishment both by Ultra-orthodox settlers, who illegally occupy territories acknowledged internationally as Palestinian properties, and by the Israeli government which did not spare a moment to announce new illegal constructions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- who found in Goldstone's recent remarks a good opportunity to drive attention from corruption charges -- hurried to call on the UN to "throw the report into the dustbin of history."

Save your efforts Mr Prime Minister because many more important UN resolutions on Palestine have ended up in that dustbin.

"Simply put," as Goldstone ended his article, I believe that whether Israel investigates the alleged war crimes, and whether Hamas abstains, that can never be the international standard to judge whether war crimes were committed or not.

As wise ancestors of humanity once said, "a picture is worth a thousand words," and there are still thousands of pictures telling what happened during the war on Gaza. I am looking forward to seeing a new version of Goldstone report, which according to its main author could be re-compiled "given what he knows now."

This article is authored by Abdul-Hakim Salah. Abdul-Hakim Salah is a Palestinian journalist based in Bethlehem and the head of Ma'an's English Desk. The source article can be found here.

P.S. Mr. Goldstone, after all your deliberation, have you determined that jewish exceptionalism and justice can not both be had, and that between the two you decided that jewish exceptionalism should prevail?

P.P.S. The Samouni family responds to Goldstone here.

Muslims, Muslims, Muslims

Eighth century palace complexes more ornate and extravagant than anything today. The Alhambra and the mosque of Cordoba must be seen in person to fully appreciate them. You will be fighting for superlatives to describe them. Awestruck is one. I was awestruck by the Alhambra the first time I saw it.
