USS Liberty Model Dedicated at Navy Memorial
On Monday, June 8, 2009, exactly 42 years after the USS Liberty (GTR-5) was attacked, in international waters off the coast of Sinai by Israel, members of the USS Liberty Veterans Association were at the U.S. Navy Memorial, in downtown Washington, D.C. Their purpose was to present a model of the vessel to the institution for it to be maintained on permanent display. Accepting the USS Liberty model on behalf of the U.S. Navy Memorial was its CEO, Rear Admiral Edward K. "Tad" Walker (ret); and responding on behalf of the USS Liberty Veterans Association was Ernest A. Gallo, its President. Mr. Gallo is also Chairman of the Liberty Foundation.
After the dedication ceremony, USS Liberty survivor, Petty Officer, (Shipfitter 3rd), Americo "Rick" Aimetti was interviewed. Hes a native of Long Island, NY, and he was only 19 years old when he served aboard the vessel. He shared some of what it was like to be on the USS Liberty on the afternoon of the attack and the effect that harrowing experience has had on him and many of his fellow crew members.
The "Liberty" was subjected, on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War, to an unprovoked assault by the Israeli Air Force and Navy for close to 75 minutes, with rockets, torpedoes, cannon fire, napalm and machine gun fire. Thirty-four crew members on the vessel were killed and 171 seriously wounded. The U.S. Navy Memorial is located at 701 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. #123.
P.S. Petty Officer Aimetti said that the Liberty crew is not anti-semitic; they just want the truth to be heard. Ah but Mr. Aimetti, the truth is anti-semitic.
Bill O'Reilly Does Standup
Normally Bill O’Reilly plays the straight man when he brings in his sidekick Dennis Miller for their fascist, mean spirited funny-ha-ha skits.
But last night O’Reilly gave a try at going solo in his defense and advocacy for torture. First he minimalizes the extent of torture that went on by stating that only three people were tortured… er, waterboarded. He colored that they were the most dangerous of the dangerous captured terrorists but didn’t color how many times they were tortured… er, waterboarded. This was not that funny and clearly just common mainstream media material. But that was just a lead in to one of his jokes.
He went on to assert that torture… er, waterboarding works. He stole this one directly from the dungeon master, Dick, himself. OK, it wasn’t that funny. And it was merely repeating an outright lie from the dungeon master as if it were a matter-of-fact truth.
Funny-man, father-Christmas, torture-enthusiast O’Reilly saved his best joke for last. It was good. I couldn’t control reactionary laughter when I heard it. Did you hear it? If you haven’t, here it goes: he said, get this, that if torture, er, waterboarding were against the law, if Bush and Cheney had broken any laws, they would have been arrested and sent to jail.
I still can’t help but laugh on that one. You have to admit, you either have to laugh or cry with that one.
But wait a minute. I wonder if father Christmas meant that as a joke… or whether he actually believed it.

Settlers Unveil New "Obama" Outpost
Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - Israeli settlers established a new illegal West Bank outpost on Thursday, dedicating it partly to US President Barack Obama.
The settlers, calling themselves the "Land of Israel Loyalists," named the outpost Oz Yehonatan, near Binyamin, but were calling part of it the "Obama Hut," according to the Israeli news agency Ynet.
And according to a report from Israel's Arutz Sheva news agency, the outpost was named "in recognition of the president’s actions, which have led to a dramatic increase in the number of outposts being built throughout Judea and Samaria [the West Bank]."
Meanwhile on Thursday, Obama firmly rejected Israeli settlements built on seized Palestinian land in the West Bank. "The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements." "This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop."

IDF Kills Palestinian Protestor at Weekly Apartheid Wall Protest
Bethlehem - Ma'an - A Palestinian demonstrator was killed and others injured after Israeli forces opened fire at an anti-wall rally in the West Bank village of Ni'lin on Friday.
The slain Palestinian was identified as Yousef Aqel Sadiq Srour, 36, who was shot in the chest with live fire, according to medics at the scene.
An Israeli military spokesperson initially denied that the soldiers used live fire, but later issued a statement justifying the man's death under the pretext that he "was a Hamas activist central to the weekly anti-separation fence protests," according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
Meanwhile, at least three protesters were injured by Israeli fire in the Ramallah-area village, but it was not immediately clear if they had been shot with live fire, rubber-coated bullets or tear gas.
However, witnesses said that the soldiers opened fire on the demonstrators before the rally had even begun at noon on Friday, according to the Israeli news agency Ynet.
Protesters also claimed that Israeli forces fired grenades at a house in an attempt to take it over, causing a number of the house's residents to suffer from tear-gas inhalation, Ynet reported.
A Palestinian ambulance was also fired upon, injuring one of its medics, witnesses said.
Last Friday, two Israeli border police officers were lightly injured during a demonstration in the same village. The Jerusalem Post reported that the two officers were hurt after protesters threw rocks at the invading forces that attempt to shut down the popular village protests each week.
The week before, a 20-year-old Palestinian demonstrator was transferred to a Ramallah hospital after Israeli forces shot him in the head with a tear-gas canister.
The young man, Mustafa Amira, was attending the same weekly demonstration against the West Bank separation wall, which cuts off nearly half of Ni'lin's land for the use of illegal Israeli settlements. Israel maintains that the wall is for its security.

Frank Lowy -- Owner of Westfield America. In May 2001, Westfield paid $US127 million for a 99-year lease on the retail area beneath the New York World Trade Center. Lowy was a member of the Golani Brigade, and fought in the Israeli war of independence. Lowy steered clear of the WTC on 9/11.
Who authorized the lease of the WTC complex to Silverstein?

Jesus Must Like Waterboarding
Ever since I heard about about Abu Grahb, I've been wanting to ask American "Christians" who love their little "Christian" decider which torture procedure they think Jesus would like the most.
Well, I'm guessing it would be waterboarding, since the little decider took such pains to stretch American law to make it legal, and the little decider consulted with God on everything. Or was this one of the times he might have thought God was looking the other way?

What’s the difference between murder and massacre?
The answer is Terry Halbardier, whose bravery and ingenuity as a 23-year-old Navy seaman spelled the difference between the murder of 34 of the USS Liberty crew and the intended massacre of all 294.
The date was June 8, 1967; for the families of the 34 murdered and for the Liberty’s survivors and their families, it is a "date which will live in infamy" – like the date of an earlier surprise attack on the U.S. Navy.
The infamy is twofold: (1) the Liberty, a virtually defenseless intelligence collection platform prominently flying an American flag in international waters, came under deliberate attack by Israeli aircraft and three 60-ton Israeli torpedo boats off the coast of the Sinai on a cloudless June afternoon during the six-day Israeli-Arab war; and (2) President Lyndon Johnson called back carrier aircraft dispatched to defend the Liberty lest Israel be embarrassed – the start of an unconscionable cover-up, including top Navy brass, that persists to this day.
Given all they have been through, the Liberty survivors and other veterans – who joined Halbardier to celebrate his belated receipt of the Silver Star – can be forgiven for having doubted that this day would ever come. In the award ceremony at the Visalia, Calif., office of Rep. Devin Nunes, the Republican congressman pinned the Silver Star next to the Purple Heart that Halbardier found in his home mailbox three years ago.
Nunes said, "The government has kept this quiet I think for too long, and I felt as my constituent he [Halbardier] needed to get recognized for the services he made to his country."
Nunes got that right. Despite the many indignities the Liberty crew has been subjected to, the mood in Visalia was pronouncedly a joyous one of Better (42 Years) Late Than Never. And, it did take some time to sink in: Wow, a gutsy congressman not afraid to let the truth hang out on this delicate issue.
Treatment Accorded the Skipper
As we gathered in Congressman Nunes’ office, I could not get out of my head the contrast between this simple, uncomplicated event and the rigmarole that senior Navy officers went through to pin a richly deserved Medal of Honor on another hero of that day, the Liberty’s skipper, Capt. William McGonagle.
Although badly wounded by Israeli fire on June 8, 1967, McGonagle was able to keep the bombed, torpedoed, napalmed Liberty afloat and limping toward Malta, where what was left of the bodies of the 34 crewmen killed and the 174 wounded could be attended to.
Do the math: yes, killed and wounded amounted to more than two-thirds of the Liberty crew of 294.
I remembered what a naval officer involved in McGonagle’s award ceremony told one of the Liberty crew: "The government is pretty jumpy about Israel … the State Department even asked the Israeli ambassador if his government had any objections to McGonagle getting the medal."
When McGonagle received his award, the White House (the normal venue for a Medal of Honor award) was all booked up, it seems, and President Johnson (who would have been the usual presenter) was unavailable. So it fell to the secretary of the navy to sneak off to the Washington Navy Yard on the banks of the acrid Anacostia River, where he presented McGonagle with the Medal of Honor and a citation that described the attack but not the identity of the attackers.
Please don’t misunderstand. The Liberty crew is not big on ceremony. They are VERY-not-big on politicians who wink when Navy comrades are killed and wounded at sea.
Getting the Truth Out
The Liberty survivors are big on getting the truth out about what actually happened that otherwise beautiful day in June 1967. Last Wednesday’s award of the Silver Star to Terry Halbardier marked a significant step in the direction of truth-telling. Is it too much to hope that the example set by Nunes may embolden other lawmakers to right the wrongs done to their Liberty-veteran constituents – and thus to chip away at what’s left of the cover-up?
Halbardier said he accepted his Silver Star on behalf of the entire 294-man crew. He and fellow survivor Don Pageler expressed particular satisfaction at the wording of the citation, which stated explicitly – with none of the usual fudging – the identity of the attackers: "The USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats in the East Mediterranean Sea…." In the past, official citations, like Capt. McGonagle’s, had avoided mentioning Israel by name when alluding to the attack.
I think former U.S. ambassador Edward Peck put it best in condemning this kind of approach as "obsequious, unctuous subservience to the peripheral interests of a foreign nation at the cost of the lives and morale of our own service members and their families." Strong words for a diplomat. But right on target.

Although badly wounded by Israeli fire on June 8, 1967, McGonagle was able to keep the bombed, torpedoed, napalmed Liberty afloat and limping toward Malta, where what was left of the bodies of the 34 crewmen killed and the 174 wounded could be attended to.
Do the math: yes, killed and wounded amounted to more than two-thirds of the Liberty crew of 294.
I remembered what a naval officer involved in McGonagle’s award ceremony told one of the Liberty crew: "The government is pretty jumpy about Israel … the State Department even asked the Israeli ambassador if his government had any objections to McGonagle getting the medal."
When McGonagle received his award, the White House (the normal venue for a Medal of Honor award) was all booked up, it seems, and President Johnson (who would have been the usual presenter) was unavailable. So it fell to the secretary of the navy to sneak off to the Washington Navy Yard on the banks of the acrid Anacostia River, where he presented McGonagle with the Medal of Honor and a citation that described the attack but not the identity of the attackers.
Please don’t misunderstand. The Liberty crew is not big on ceremony. They are VERY-not-big on politicians who wink when Navy comrades are killed and wounded at sea.
Getting the Truth Out
The Liberty survivors are big on getting the truth out about what actually happened that otherwise beautiful day in June 1967. Last Wednesday’s award of the Silver Star to Terry Halbardier marked a significant step in the direction of truth-telling. Is it too much to hope that the example set by Nunes may embolden other lawmakers to right the wrongs done to their Liberty-veteran constituents – and thus to chip away at what’s left of the cover-up?
Halbardier said he accepted his Silver Star on behalf of the entire 294-man crew. He and fellow survivor Don Pageler expressed particular satisfaction at the wording of the citation, which stated explicitly – with none of the usual fudging – the identity of the attackers: "The USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats in the East Mediterranean Sea…." In the past, official citations, like Capt. McGonagle’s, had avoided mentioning Israel by name when alluding to the attack.
I think former U.S. ambassador Edward Peck put it best in condemning this kind of approach as "obsequious, unctuous subservience to the peripheral interests of a foreign nation at the cost of the lives and morale of our own service members and their families." Strong words for a diplomat. But right on target.

Turns out it is really the handiwork of a creepy FBI informant. The story strengthens the narrative that the "homeland" is under attack. It's not.
By the now, it's maddeningly familiar. A scary terrorist plot is announced. Then it's revealed that the suspects are a hapless bunch of ne'er-do-wells or run-of-the-mill thugs without the slightest connection to any terrorists at all, never mind to Al Qaeda. Finally, the last piece of the puzzle: the entire plot is revealed to have been cooked up by a scummy government agent-provocateur.
I've seen this movie before.
In this case, the alleged perps -- Onta Williams, James Cromitie, David Williams, and Laguerre Payen -- were losers, ex-cons, drug addicts. Al Qaeda they're not. Without the assistance of the agent who entrapped them, they would never have dreamed of committing political violence, nor would they have had the slightest idea about where to acquire plastic explosives or a Stinger missile. That didn't stop prosecutors from acting as if they'd captured Osama bin Laden himself. Noted the Los Angeles Times:
Prosecutors called it the latest in a string of homegrown terrorism plots hatched after Sept. 11.
"It's hard to envision a more chilling plot," Assistant U.S. Atty. Eric Snyder said in court Thursday. He described all four suspects as "eager to bring death to Jews."
Actually, it's hard to imagine a stupider, less competent, and less important plot. The four losers were ensnared by a creepy FBI agent who hung around the mosque in upstate New York until he found what he was looking for. Here's the New York Times account:
Salahuddin Mustafa Muhammad, the imam at the mosque where the authorities say the confidential informant first encountered the men, said none of the men were active in the mosque. ...
Mr. Cromitie was there last June, and he met a stranger.
He had no way of knowing that the stranger's path to the mosque began in 2002, when he was arrested on federal charges of identity theft. He was sentenced to five years' probation, and became a confidential informant for the F.B.I. He began showing up at the mosque in Newburgh around 2007, Mr. Muhammad said.
The stranger's behavior aroused the imam's suspicions. He invited other worshipers to meals, and spoke of violence and jihad, so the imam said he steered clear of him.
"There was just something fishy about him," Mr. Muhammad said. Members "believed he was a government agent."
Mr. Muhammad said members of his congregation told him the man he believed was the informant offered at least one of them a substantial amount of money to join his "team."
So a creepy thug buttonholes people at a mosque, foaming at the mouth about violence and jihad? This is law enforcement? Just imagine if someone did this at a local church, or some synagogue. And the imam says the people "believed he was a government agent."
Preying on these losers, none of whom were apparently actual Muslims, the "confidential informant" orchestrated the acquisition of a disabled Stinger missile to shoot down military planes and cooked up a wild scheme about attacking a Jewish center in the Bronx.
It gets even more pathetic:
The only one of the four suspects who appears to have aroused any suspicion was Payen, a Haitian native who attended the Newburgh mosque. Assistant imam Hamid Rashada said his dishevelment and odd behavior disturbed some members, said the assistant imam, Hamid Rashada.
When Payen appeared in court, defense attorney Marilyn Reader described him as "intellectually challenged" and on medication for schizophrenia. The Associated Press said that when he was asked if he understood the proceedings, Payen replied: "Sort of."
Despite the pompous statements from Mayor Bloomberg of New York and other politicians, including Representative Peter King, the whole story is bogus. The four losers may have been inclined to violence, and they may have harbored a virulent strain of anti-Semitism. But it seems that the informant whipped up their violent tendencies and their hatred of Jews, cooked up the plot, incited them, arranged their purchase of weapons, and then had them busted. To ensure that it made headlines, the creepy informant claimed to be representing a Pakistani extremist group, Jaish-e Muhammad, a bona fide terrorist organization. He wasn't, of course.
It is disgusting and outrageous that the FBI is sending provocateurs into mosques.
The headlines reinforce the very fear that Dick Cheney is trying to stir up. The story strengthens the narrative that the "homeland" is under attack. It's not. Plot after plot -- the destruction of the Brooklyn Bridge! bombing the New York Subways! taking down the Sears Tower! bombing the Prudential building in Newark! -- proved to be utter nonsense.
